Today, February 6, 2024, we celebrate the five-year journey of the Omaolo service. Omaolo.fi is a public social and healthcare service for all residents of Finland. Over the past five years, Omaolo has grown into a significant part of Finnish healthcare. It has demonstrated how effectively digital services can support the health and well-being of citizens.
Omaolo is an electronic service and interaction platform for social, healthcare, and dental care, supporting self-care and guiding users to appropriate assistance when needed. The service integrates symptoms reported by citizens, measurement results, and health information with research data and official treatment recommendations. Its personalized guidance is based on evidence-based medical knowledge.
The service is based on the most up-to-date research information from Kustannus Oy Duodecim's medical database and the Current Care Guidelines. Omaolo is a CE-marked medical device in accordance with the Medical Device Directive.
Saving time, effort, and costs to access services
The City of Helsinki has estimated that the coronavirus symptom assessment initiated by a resident through Omaolo saved approximately 2.5 million euros compared to if all contacts had been made through a professional. To handle the same work, an average of 42 more nursing positions would have been needed.
– The corona period was an excellent example of the benefits of Omaolo. The Omaolo service was able to meet the demand, but also municipalities and the then hospital districts were able to quickly plan and implement new service processes, says Anne-Mari Juntti, Key Account Manager responsible for Omaolo at Mediconsult.
– Mediconsult's CEO Tommi Salaspuro thanks all partners for their contributions to Omaolo's journey so far. He emphasizes that high-quality, customer-oriented digital services provide significant benefits for both residents and healthcare professionals.
The development and distribution of the Omaolo service are managed by the state development company DigiFinland Oy. Mediconsult was selected as the technical implementer of the Omaolo service in December 2016, alongside Solita, as part of the then ODA project. Since then, Mediconsult Oy and Solita Oy have been responsible for product development and infrastructure as a consortium.
